888.com World Cup of Pool 2013 – down to last four

21st September, 888.com World Cup of Pool 2013 Final four set for Sunday show down Quarter Finals Philippines 9-1 Hungary Chinese Taipei 9-3 England A TEAM PHILIPPINES made up of Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza ended the 888.com World Cup of Pool journey of Hungary as they hammered them 9-1 to advance to Sunday’s semi-finals where they will face Chinese Taipei who beat England. With victories over Croatia, Singapore and now Hungary, there were probably tougher routes to the final day of the event but Orcollo and Corteza barely put a foot wrong as they broke well, potted well and on the rare occasions that their opponents got to the table, it was to extricate themselves from a snooker. The Hungarians, who qualified for the main event in a qualifying tournament in August, had put out China in the first round and then Russia in round two, will take a lot from their participation in the event and come back stronger next year. “We were a bit lucky off the break,” said Corteza, modestly […]

A blistering break from Muratore left them with no reward as the 1 ball was covered by the 2 and […]

The Hungarians got off to a fast start as they made the most of some Russian errors and although Stepanov and Chinakhov mounted a comeback it was not enough. That puts the Hungarian pair in the quarter-finals where they will face the Philippines who came through unscathed against Singapore […]

The Hungarian duo of Gabor Solymosi and Mikos Balazs had scrapped their way through a European qualifying event in Croatia last month, but their respective careers to date have been fairly low key. On the other hand, the Chinese pair of Li Hewen and Liu Haitao, have excellent track records with Li in particular, a twice winner of this event and also a bronze and silver medallist at the World Pool Championship in 2006 and 2012 respectively. However, pedigree counted for nothing as the Hungarians played flawlessly to move into a 5-0 lead. Despite the Chinese grabbing a couple of racks, to give themselves a slim chance in the winner breaks format, they […]

They won five racks in a row from 2-1 down to seal victory, after Austria, represented by Jasmine and Albin Ouschan, looked set to go 3-1 ahead. Jasmine, though, miscued pocketing the brown 7 and lost position. Trying to catch up left her with a tough cut on the 9 ball which she left in the jaws of the corner pocket. After that the tide turned as the confident Finnish duo sprinted for the line. “It’s always tough in the first match. We were a bit jittery and they had a chance for 3-1 but it was a tough one for Jasmine on the 9 and she […]
