The Pageantry of Women’s Pool

AS THE 2013 WOMEN’S WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS IN SHENYANG, CHINA, ORGANIZERS GIVE THE LADIES A SEND OFF FIT FOR QUEENS. BY TED LERNER – WPA PRESS OFFICER Photos Courtesy of Tai Chengze/top147.com (Shenyang, China)–Anyone who has ever been to any kind of event in China knows the importance that the Chinese place on ceremony.  Everyone, especially the organizers, and other local dignitaries who didn’t even have anything to do with  putting the event together, are all given their moment to shine, usually with long winded speeches that nobody listens to.  Guests are made to feel that they are about to get the keys to the Forbidden City in Beijing. Often times food is involved, lots of it, as well as copious amounts of alcoholic drink. Teenage girls in elaborate get-ups dance to some loud and catchy song. Throngs of rabid photographers swarm the event recording it all. And so it was at the opening ceremony  of the 2013 WPA Women’s World 9-ball Championship on Thursday night inside the ultra-hip Richgate Shopping Center complex here […]

Andreuzzi over Ibric like a hurricane

Khodjaeva once again on the loser’s side Sarajevo,  Bosnia  &  Hercegovina:  With  an  8:0  whitewash,  Nino Andreuzzi (GER) finished Azur Ibric’s (BIH) hopes in the 9-ball competition. The game was 9-ball and the round was the  single  elimination  round  of  the  final  32 junior players. 9-ball is  a short rack game and is   said  to  be  the  fastest  of  all  pool-billiard games.  However,  Andreuzzi took that probably  a  bit  too  literally  in  his   match  with Ibric. He played fluently  and quick, coming to a 5:0 lead after only  23 minutes. The Bosnian definitely  was the underdog in this encounter from   the  very  beginning.  Andreuzzi  had already  taken two medals this week – Bronze in  straight  pool  and  Gold  in  10-ball.  But  still Ibric was playing on his home turf  having the support  of  the  vivacious Bosnian  crowd.  But that did not seem  to impress Andreuzzi at all. He consequently  played his rhythm and punished  Ibric  for his mistakes.  In  the 6th  rack,  Ibric  got  to  the  9-ball  and  had  a  good  chance  to  finally  open  […]

Gold medals for Ivanovskaia, Filler and Tangudd

Surprising results in the finals Sarajevo,  Bosnia  &  Hercegovina:  While  the  favored  player  won  the pupil’s division, the winners in the other division were a bit of a surprise. The pupil’s division was  dominated by  Joshua Filler (GER). He was never really  endangered  and  made  his way  to  the  title  with  a  superior performance.  His  opponent  in  the final  match,  Oliver  Szolnoki (HUN) did his  best  to challenge Filler  and make  his  life  as  hard  as  possible but in in the end he had to let Filler take the crown with a 6:4 victory in the final. In  the  girl’s match, the favored  player got beaten.  Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) who has already snatched  the crown in  10-ball  this week, played a close match with Veronika Ivanovskaia (GER). Both girls did not want to show any  weaknesses but the pressure was on for both of them. Some small mistakes  were committed on both sides but Ivanovskaia managed to get back on track first. She got  back in the zone and made use of the chances that […]

German also juniors on their way Sarajevo,  Bosnia  &  Hercegovina:  Team   Netherlands   defeated  team Slovenia in the  junior’s division with 2:1. The  last  round of  today  featured  team’s matches  at  the  Dynamic  Billard EPBF  European  Championships Youth.  While   the   pupils   had   a loser’s round going on,  the juniors had  already  entered  the  single elimination  stage.  There,  team Netherlands  had to deal with team Slovenia.  In  9-ball,  Nathalie Seichter  (NED) tried to  defend the Dutch  colors.  But  she  got  simply overpowered  by  Slovenia’s  Denis Kragolnik  with  8:3  in  45  minutes. That  turned  the  score  1:0 in  favor of  team  Slovenia.  At  that  time, Guido Janssen (NED) was  leading 5:0  in  8-ball  over  Ana  Gradisnik (SLO)  and  her  brother  Klemen  Gradisnik  (SLO)  was trailing  25:42  to  Tim  De Ruyter  (NED).  Everything  looked  like  the  decider  would  once  again  be  the straight  pool match. And that  turned  out  to  be  true.  Janssen  easily  won  his 8-ball  over  Ana  Gradisnik  with  7:1.  While  the  team   score  was  tied  at  1:1,  De Ruyter  played a much better straight  pool  than  […]

Gold for Filler and Batkowski

Medal fight between Germany and Poland ended in a dead heat Sarajevo,  Bosnia  &  Hercegovina:  The  new  European Straight Pool Champions  are  Joshua Filler  (GER)  in  the  pupil’s  division  and  Sebastian Batkowski (POL) in the junior’s  division. Filler  started  out  nervous  in his  match  with  Krystian Cwikla (POL).  Cwikla  went  ahead  and took an early  31:4 lead.  He played much  calmer  and  seemed  to  be more  focussed  than  Filler.  But Filler  never  gave  in.  He  stayed  in the  match  and  Cwikla  committed some  unforced  errors.  Filler brutally  punished  that  by  running 45  balls   on  Cwikla  to  turn  the score  65:37  in  his  favor.  That shocked Cwikla.  He could  not  find his  way  back  into  the  match  and allowed  Filler  to  take  the  points needed to win the match and the Championship title with 75:43. In  the  junior’s  division,  Batkowski  found  a  tough  match  with  Tobias Bongers  (GER). The match was even for a long time. But then Batkowski ran 76 balls  in two consecutive innings on Bongers,  suddenly  leading 76:50.  Bongers hung in there and  […]

Bongers wins having one foot in the grave already

Amazing comeback by young German Sarajevo,  Bosnia &  Hercegovina:   In  an  exciting and thrilling encounter, Tobias Bongers (GER)  came from behind and vanquished Tian Zhang  (SWE) with 100:95. In short: Zhang was  the better  player  over a long period in the match.  He committed  less  mistakes   than  Bongers  and  played  rock  solid  while  Bongers missed  some  important  and  easy  shots.  But his nerves might  have played a trick  on  him. Being  in  the  lead  with  95:72,  Zhang  found himself  with  the  balls   spread  open  on  the table  after  a  break  shot  but  no  easy  shot  in front of him. He carefully  examined the layout and  went  for  a  tough  shot  –  and  missed  it. That  brought  Bongers back  to  the  table.  He was about  to put  a  spoke  in  Zhang’s  wheel. At  that  point  in  time,  one  would  not  have thought  that  Bongers  would  be  able  to  keep  himself  together  and  run  the needed  balls.  But  Bongers  surprised the  crowd.  He  rose  to  the  occasion and made  no  more mistake,  eliminating  Zhang  with  100:95  from  […]
