Souquet out after two rounds Probably the most famous casualty of day 1 of the Dynamic Billard Austrian open in Hotel Alpina, St. Johann, Austria, is BCA Hall of Famer Ralf Souquet (GER). He lost two straight matches against Maksim Dudanets (RUS) with 7:9 and then to completely unheralded Andreas Koukiadakis (GRE) also with 8:9 after being in the lead with 8:4. After having won the last Euro-Tour in Kyrenia, North Cyprus, this is a huge disappointment for the German superstar. Other notable results from today include Belgium’s Serge Das losing to Dudanets with 8:9 in his first round match. Then, he remained victorious over Michel Bartol from Croatia with the same result. According to the information on Das’ Facebook page, his opponent dogged some important shots during the 17th rack and allowed Das to stay in the tournament. Preview: 2014 GB9 Paul Medati Trophy, the Pro Cup & the Rasson Billiards Challenge Cup Memories from yesteryear will be rekindled in more ways than one as the GB 9 Ball Tour returns to Daventry for this year’s Paul Medati Trophy, the GB9 Pro Cup and the Rasson Billiards Challenge Cup. Whilst not everyone on the tour will have played against or alongside Paul Medati in their careers, most will be aware of his dedication to cuesports and to GB9. A former snooker professional who made the hop over to American pool in later life, his was a warm and wonderful character who is missed on the tour to this day. Knowing that fact and knowing most of the pool world needs another wave of interest, like that generated by the films, „The Color of Money“ -1986 (shot in my home room of Chris’s Billiards, Chicago) and it’s predecessor, „The Hustler“ -1961. Both films created a wave of interest that propelled the industry and the players for over two decades a piece. However, no one has ever gone into the true world of professional pool and billiards with a camera to capture ephemeral match-ups, banter, and stories, as well capture the pressure and will of those who live by their cues. Starting in 2006, with the legends of Chicago, I found my pool world being thrown into chaos. „Raising the Hustler“ is the feature length documentary about pool, its history, it’s mystique and its players. Souquet and Ouschan win the Dynamic Billard North Cyprus Open Ralf Souquet (GER) and Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) have won the titles at the Dynamic Billard North Cyprus Open Euro-Tour. In the men’s division, Ralf Souquet played at his best. He took down great names like Ivo Aarts (NED) 9:0, Imran Majid (GBR) 9:3, Mieszko Fortunski (POL) 9:3 and in the final match Karl Boyes (GBR) with 9:4. The final match was dominated by Souquet from start to finish. A bit scrappy in the beginning, Souquet turned out to have the far better break shot than Boyes. He pocketed almost every time a vll on his break and ran out 4 racks without even allowing Boyes into the table. The Brit however had to struggle with his break shot. Most of the time, he came up dry with no ball down or not enough balls crossing the kitchen line. This situation was taken advantage of by Souquet without any mercy. Appleton loses to Souquet in 9-Ball In his first appearance on European soil, Darren Appleton (GBR) lost his first match to Ralf Souquet (GER) with 7:9. It was not necessarily a lucky draw for Appleton. After having achieved so many titles abroad since he moved to the US in 2011, Appleton came back to Europe to compete in the 9-ball division of the Dynamic Billard European Championships and in the Euro-Tour which follows right after the EC. He drew Ralf Souquet in his first round match. The match was a highlight for all fans and spectators. However, Souquet controlled most of the match and was leading big time. He even went on the hill, being 8:3 up on Appleton in a race to nine. That looked like a clear victory for the German. But Appleton is known to never give up. 8-Ball titles for Sirotina, Tähti and van den Berg The 8-Ball individuals at the Dynamic Billard European Championships in Kyrenia, North Cyprus, have been decided. The newly crowned Champions are Darya Sirotina (RUS), Jouni Tähti (FIN) and Nick van den Berg (NED). „The toughest match of the day was the quarter-final encounter with Jasmin Ouschan“, stated a happy Sirotina after the final match. She had just defeated Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) with 6:5. The match was filled with ups and down with Sirotina getting 5:3 advantage over Khodjaeva. But the Belgian knew how to stay in the match and pulled back two racks from Sirotina to tie the match at hill-hill. There, Sirotina proved her nerves and ran out the rack and the match to win her first European Champion title in the women’s division. Jouni Tähti has been there quite some time already.
