888.com World Cup of Pool 2013 – down to last four

21st September, 888.com World Cup of Pool 2013 Final four set for Sunday show down Quarter Finals Philippines 9-1 Hungary Chinese Taipei 9-3 England A TEAM PHILIPPINES made up of Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza ended the 888.com World Cup of Pool journey of Hungary as they hammered them 9-1 to advance to Sunday’s semi-finals where they will face Chinese Taipei who beat England. With victories over Croatia, Singapore and now Hungary, there were probably tougher routes to the final day of the event but Orcollo and Corteza barely put a foot wrong as they broke well, potted well and on the rare occasions that their opponents got to the table, it was to extricate themselves from a snooker. The Hungarians, who qualified for the main event in a qualifying tournament in August, had put out China in the first round and then Russia in round two, will take a lot from their participation in the event and come back stronger next year. “We were a bit lucky off the break,” said Corteza, modestly […]

888.com World Cup of Pool 2013 – Down to the last eight in London

20th September, 888.com World Cup of Pool 2013 Down to the last eight in London Round 2 Japan 7-6 USA Holland 7-5 India England A 7-5 Italy WITH TWO days play left at the 888.com World Cup of Pool, the tournament is down to the last eight teams as Japan, Holland and England A all recorded second round wins at the York Hall in London. With England B already through to the weekend’s quarter finals, the A team followed them in as they came from behind to beat the plucky Italian pairing of Bruno Muratore and Fabio Petroni. The Italians enjoyed some good fortune and before long they were 4-1 to the good as the English team of Karl Boyes and Darren Appleton sank deeper into their chairs. England took the next, but the Italians though were in stroke and they took the next to move to 5-2 and put the English under extreme pressure. A blistering break from Muratore left them with no reward as the 1 ball was covered by the 2 and […]

888.com World Cup of Pool 2013 – Thursday night round up

19th September, 888.com World Cup of Pool 2013 Double white-wash for Teams England! Round 1 England A 7-0 Indonesia Round 2 Finland 7-6 Korea England B 7-0 Germany THERE WAS double joy for the two English teams at the 888.com World Cup of Pool as first England A routed Indonesia 7-0 to reach the second round, and then the B team smashed Germany by a similar score line to reach the quarter-finals. Both teams looked in outstanding shape and with them both being in different halves of the draw the possibilities of an all-England final on Sunday night are not out of the question. England A, comprised of former World Champions Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes, looked very much the part as they completed the first round matches with a thumping 7-0 win over Indonesia at the York Hall to set up a second round game against Italy. Looking focused throughout, England never let the Indonesian pairing of Ricky Yang and Irsal Nasution off the hook as they put on the best performance of the […]

They’re going ‚Ga Ga‘ over Gabica

QATAR BASED FILIPINO ANTONIO GABICA STORMS INTO THE SEMI-FINALS, JOINS BIADO, HOHMANN AND BOYES IN THE FINAL FOUR OF THE WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP BY TED LERNER WPA PRESS OFFICER Photos Courtesy of Takayamo Takao, Richard Walker and the WPA  (Doha, Qatar)–Over a 15-plus year professional career, Antonio Gabica has often been viewed by Filipino pool fans as an extremely talented player who has a tendency to wither when faced with big time pressure situations. But for the man affectionately known as “Gaga” to his fellow Filipinos, that once signature trait now sits forever buried deep in the Qatari desert. Displaying masterful, career-defining cueing prowess, and the heart of a proud lion, Gabica notched three straight pressure cooker victories today, and barged into the semi-finals of the 2013 World 9-ball Championship.  There he joins three other red hot players in the race to pool’s pantheon, among them fellow Filipino Carlo Biado, Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann, and Great Britain’s Karl Boyes. Each race to 11, alternate break semi-final will feature the Philippines versus Europe. In one semi-final, Gabica […]

THREE POOL POWERHOUSES MAKE UP NEARLY HALF THE FIELD AS THE WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP MOVES INTO THE FINAL 64 BY TED LERNER WPA PRESS OFFICER Photos Courtesy Richard Walker and Takayamo Takao/onthehill.jp (Doha, Qatar)–There’s something about Judgement Day in the World 9-ball Championship that brings out the wild drama, and the crazy pressure that  is unique to professional pool at the highest levels. It makes a high stakes money game seem like child’s play. This is, after all,  the world championship. And this is the moment where, with the field about to be cut in half, with all matches do or die, a player  gets his chance to reach  the final 64 single elimination stage. From there,  in just three days with six more wins, he might just make history and win a world title. Sure, for most players this incredible dream will remain just that. But pool is a sport where the slimmest roll of the ball, even just a millimeter, can mean the difference between staying a nobody or being crowned king. As […]

ENRIQUE ROJAS BECOMES THE FIRST EVER PLAYER FROM CHILE TO ADVANCE TO A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP KNOCKOUT STAGE, JOINS 31 OTHERS IN DOHA’S FINAL 64 BY TED LERNER WPA PRESS OFFICER Photos Courtesy Richard Walker, Takayama Takao/onthehill.jp (Doha, Qatar)–Relief and pure joy were two emotions on wide display on Day 3 of the 2013 World 9-ball Championship,  as 32 players booked their spots into Wednesday’s Final 64, the single elimination knockout phase that signals the real start of pool’s most prestigious event. Relief came from those top players who just wanted to notch their second win and put the madness that can be the group stages behind them. Pure joy came from the other players, those that know that winning this tournament is a massive long shot, and just getting through to the big dance is a career defining moment in itself. The 128 player field that began here on Saturday was already considered by many to be the strongest ever gathered for this event. As the wannabes wither and the main stage starts to take […]

Breaking towards some big time showdowns – Day 2 Report from the 2013 World 9-ball Championship

AS THE LACK OF UPSETS CONTINUES ON DAY 2 OF THE WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHP, POOLS BEST ARE SURELY HEADED ON A COLLISION COURSE BY TED LERNER WPA PRESS OFFICER Photos Courtesy of QBSF, Takayama Takao/onthehill.jp, and Richard Walker (Doha, Qatar)–As the long, slow grind of this week-long World 9-ball championship wound its way through Day 2, perhaps the best way to try and understand where it’s all headed at this point is to listen to the words of defending champion Darren Appleton, after he won his opening match on Day 1. Said the Brit: “There are probably only 20 players who you can actually say are favorites to win this tournament, 10 more who are knocking on the door of perhaps winning it, and 20 more who can, on any given night, beat any of those top 30 players.” Add that simple equation together and you’ve got 50 top pros who can wreak massive havoc out on the blue pitch, with  30 who can realistically even consider entering the winner’s circle come September 13th.  I […]

Kick off right on script – Day 1 Report from the 2013 World 9-ball Championship

SHOCKERS HARD TO COME BY ON DAY 1 OF THE WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP AS FAVORITES ROLL BY TED LERNER WPA PRESS OFFICER Photos Courtesy of Richard Walker and Takayamo“Mathilda“ Takao/onthehill.jp (Doha, Qatar)–Fans of the World 9-ball Championship have become accustomed to the fun of shocking first day upsets that send great players scrambling over to the do-or-die losers side and, at the same time, introduce us to new names from far flung nations that we had no idea produced such talented pool players. Saturday in blazing hot Doha, Qatar was, except for one match right at the end, not one of those days. 96 players out of the 128 in the field vying for 9-ball supremacy saw action today inside the icy cold Al Arabi Sports Club, and by and large the story line for the eight hours of play hardly veered from a predictable script.  This is not to suggest that some of pool’s biggest names didn’t taste defeat. Or that we didn’t see some great new talent.  But in those matches which featured […]
